Bentwater Ladies Organization Monthly Newsletter
Vol. 25 No. 9 September 2025

Summer is over and fall is on its way. It is still hot but there are signs of fall all around us.  Days are getting shorter along with slightly cooler nights.
The most notable holiday in September is Labor Day.  This year Labor Day is celebrated on September 1, 2025.
Although Peter J. McGuire is often credited with coming up with the idea of Labor Day, recent research has shown that similarly named Matthew Maguire is more likely the originator. Either way, the holiday dates back to 1882. That year, either McGuire, a labor union leader who was the general secretary of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, or Maguire, secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York, proposed the holiday, and the Central Labor Union adopted the proposal and made it happen. The date, McGuire suggested, was chosen simply for its convenience of falling “nearly midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.”
The rule of not wearing white after Labor Day can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20thcenturies, primarily among the American upper class.  Here are some key points regarding its origins:
·      Class Distinction:  The rule was initially a way for the wealthy to distinguish themselves from the newly wealthy or “nouveau riche.”  Those who could afford to travel during the summer months often wore white as a symbol of leisure and affluence.
·      Seasonal Changes:  Labor Day marks the end of summer.  As the weather cools, it became customary to switch to darker, heavier fabrics.
·      Practicality:  Before modern conveniences like air conditioning, lighter colors were favored in the summer because they reflected sunlight and kept wearers cooler.
September 7, is National Grandparents Day.  Marian McQuade hoped to establish a national day that would honor grandparents, and in 1970, she began a campaign to do so. McQuade raised awareness about senior citizens throughout the 1970s. In1978, President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day. Each year, the president makes a proclamation to keep the tradition going.
